Gunnar Zimmer is a well-known graffiti writer, sculptor, painter, carpenter, model and prop maker, art director, construction manager, designer, and consultant. A multi-talented artist and founder of the Styronaut studio. In addition to all of the above Gunnar is an experienced cyclist, fast and of few words.
We photographed the artist and his new bike in the studio next door to the Bonanno workshop.
Here, too, everything is made by hand.
The contact with the materials is direct and immediate. The atelier is surrounded by polystyrene, plaster forms and sculpting tools. A project based on an idea or a drawing often leads to very large works.
In 2020 he was head of the sculptor department for "Matrix" Part IV, where he developed the studio set construction for all the "real" underworld sets - caves connected by tunnels that had to look as if they had been dug by huge rock-digging machines.
Also in 2017, Gunner worked as a head sculptor for the Netflix series Dark.
His paintings are also dense with energy, strong gestures, and sharp colors.
Gunnar's work and the energy he brings to the conception of these great projects are also a source of constant inspiration for our workshop, and we are very proud and happy to be able to exchange ideas and perspectives at the end of the day with a professional who, on paper, may seem far removed from the work of the frame builder, but in reality shares many of its situations and dynamics.
With this Stay Loco, we unveiled the EDIZIONE CORSA logo, an idea under development for a color scheme inspired by racing and speed.
Gunnar is a racing enthusiast and so are we.
For some time now we have been fantasizing about a Bonanno team jersey designs and new paint schemes during after-work chats and evening rides.
So it was decided to try it out on this frame, which, knowing the subject, would be fast.
The racer chose geometries for rapid and responsive off-road riding, stainless chainstays, Enve gravel fork, and Shimano GRx mechanical groupset.
In his work, the knowledge of the material and the manual skills are the basis for the realization of each project just like in every artisan practice.
Passion and dedication, repetition and practice, technique or flair, cycling and craftsmanship.
So much of it is complex and difficult, but the result shines with simplicity and immediacy.
One could say, like a bicycle.
